- Installation Guidelines. NT 2.1.3. For NT 3.51/4.0.
- 12/9/1996
-
- The installation of SurfReport for NT goes well if you follow these instructions. There are a
- few gotchas if you are not careful or if you decide to take some detours! For complete documentation
- and to join our online forum, visit http://netrics.com/SurfReport.
-
- Also, as of this writing, it has been tested on NT 3.51 using Netscape's
- FastTrack Server. If you are a 3.51 user, please note the step required in phase 2!
- SR does not care what kind of HTTP Server you are running as long as the http server
- produces readable common or combined log format.
-
- Generally speaking there are three phases:
-
- (1) Run install.exe to create the surfreport directory tree in your Web
- document hierarchy and to let the installer know where your cgi-bin
- directory is. The installer makes one addition to your registry and copies
- perl.exe and blat.exe to your system32 NT directory.
-
- (2) Run a small batch file from the DOS command line to register your copy
- of SurfReport and to install our mail handler.
-
- (3) Launch SurfReport with your Web browser.
-
- -------------------
-
- Phase 1.
-
- OK. Here we go. For the sake of clarity, here are some example
- names I am going to use:
-
- Web document root directory=\inetpub\wwwroot
- Web cgi-bin directory=\inetpub\wwwroot\cgi-bin
- mail server=art.netrics.com
- mail address=lane@netrics.com
- mail name=lane
- Web URL=http://www.ntsite.com
-
- Copy install.exe to \temp and run it from there. It is a self-extracting
- executable.
-
- The only prompts you need to answer are your Web document root directory
- and cgi-bin directory. You can of course browse to find these.
-
- Web document root directory=\inetpub\wwwroot
- Web cgi-bin directory=\inetpub\wwwroot\cgi-bin
-
- are example directories.
-
- When running the installer, do not worry about completing any further
- prompts than these.
-
- Restart the computer so the registry changes take effect.
-
- Update your Web Server so that SurfReport can run programs out of its own cgi
- bin directory if necessary. These files might be located here:
-
- \inetpub\wwwroot\surfreport\cgi
-
- NOTE: it is not mandatory that SurfReport directory be located at the
- root level of your Web document hierarchy.
- -------------------
-
- Phase 2
-
- Open a DOS window and change to the surfreport home directory and
- complete the installation using these two commands at the DOS prompt.
-
- cd \inetpub\wwwroot\surfreport
- install2 your_mail.server.com your_mail_name
-
- Use of course the correct path to the surfreport home directory and use
- your own mail server and account name. The last command is
- a simple batch file to configure the mailer and to register SR.
-
- You will answer a couple of questions for the purpose of registering
- SurfReport. Be sure to jot down your registration number.
-
- NT 3.51 Users: Using the file manager, be sure that the file type, cgi,
- is associated with \winnt\system32\perl.exe which was installed in phase 1.
-
- Note: Your HTTP Server must enable the cgi file type as an executable type.
- If not, configure your server and restart it.
-
- -------------------
-
- Phase 3
-
- Open your Web browser and point it to SR's configuration URL:
-
- http://www.ntsite.com/cgi-bin/surfreport.cgi/config
-
- (If this command fails it is because .cgi has not been added as an
- executable file type to your registry for web applications. Phase 1
- is supposed to do this automatically)
-
- Answer the prompts correctly. For an example of NETRICS.COM's
- configuration, visit this URL:
-
- http://art.netrics.com/bli/SR/2.1.1/cgi-bin/surfreport.cgi/config
-
- Some of the questions are a little obscure and appear overlapping but
- indeed they are not. As of this writing, most of the documentation on
- SR has a decidedly UNIX flavor. This is not all that bad because as it
- turns out, we accomplished the port using a single code base.
-
- Look at these documents in your surfreport home directory:
-
- Readme.txt, ServerDocs.txt, NTBetaNotes.txt (this document).
-
- Finally, be sure and visit http://netrics.com/SurfReport to download a
- copy of the SurfReport manual in pdf format. Look closely at advanced
- tasks section for further tips. Ask questions at the SurfReport Sounding Board
- Forum.
-
- And, of course, thank YOU for trying SurfReport for NT.
